Commission a portrait from a photo
Learn more about commissioning an original oil painting or pencil portrait, from process and pricing to delivery.
How does commissioning a painting work?
I work from photographs rather than from life, making commissioning a portrait easy for busy families or professionals. If you’re interested in working together, simply use the contact form to get in touch about your idea. From there, the process is straightforward:
1. Share photos & ideas
Send a few clear, well-lit images. Together, we’ll decide on the best reference picture to use and discuss your vision for the painting.
2. Confirm price and timeline
Once we have a clear plan, I’ll confirm a price and timeline. A 40% deposit secures your commission and your place in my schedule.
3. Painting phase
Painting typically begins with a sketch and then a tonal underpainting, before building colour in layers. During this stage I will send you progress pictures.
4. Approval and delivery
Once complete, you will receive photos of the finished piece for approval. The remaining balance is due on approval before your painting is shipped (UK-only) or collected (from London).
